What is surcharge in TalleFlow?
Surcharge is an additional charge you can apply to invoices, separate from tax. It works similarly to tax — you can set a global default in Finance Settings and apply or override it at the invoice or line level. Surcharge shows up as its own line in the invoice summary so clients can see exactly what they're being charged.
Set a global surcharge rate
Go to Finance → Settings
Find the Surcharge field (alongside the global tax rate)
Enter your default surcharge rate
Save your settings
The global rate will be available as the default whenever you create an invoice.
Apply surcharge on packages and service items
When editing a package or service item in Offerings, you'll see surcharge-related settings — including whether surcharge applies to that item and what rate to use. These settings flow through when the package or item is added to an invoice.
Apply surcharge in the invoice editor
Open the invoice in the editor
In the Properties Panel, choose whether to apply the global surcharge
Review the surcharge rate fields — you can accept the global default or enter a custom rate
To override surcharge for a specific line item, set the surcharge rate at the line level
Override behavior: If a line-level surcharge is set, it takes precedence over the document/global rate. If no surcharge is configured at any level, surcharge defaults to 0.
How surcharge affects invoice totals
Line | Calculation |
Subtotal | Sum of line items |
Tax | Calculated from discounted subtotal |
Surcharge | Calculated from discounted subtotal (independently from tax) |
Total | Discounted subtotal + tax + surcharge |
Tax and surcharge are always calculated from the same base — the post-discount subtotal — and are independent of each other.
